Research Proposals. The following remarks are intended to help those applying for a place to study for the PhD, as well as those applying for a place on one of the Faculty’s MPhil courses. They are also intended to help with subsequent applications to funding bodies.
Dissertations are optional in Part I and compulsory in Part II. The dissertation must be on a topic which falls within the scope of one or more of ASNC Tripos Part I Papers 1-10 and ASNC Tripos Part II Papers 1-12. Opting for a dissertation in Part I has certain attractions.
The research undertaken by our body of PhD students is a significant national asset held in the form of theses. Until recently only hardbound copies of theses were collected and catalogued by the University Library, but this changed on 1st October 2017 when the Board of Graduate Studies introduced the requirement that all PhD students deposit both a hard copy and an electronic copy of their.
MPhil students are required to submit three essays and a dissertation. Each of them must be on a topic approved by the Degree Committee that falls within one of the specified subject areas. You are encouraged to explore a range of different topics, balancing them so that they are both relevant to your interests and also span the subject of History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine.

This aspect of the course is equivalent to 4 modules and allows the study of an aspect of engineering and sustainable development to be pursued in depth. The dissertation represents a major element of the MPhil and is the opportunity for each student to extract maximum value from their time at Cambridge.
